Hello again, treasure hunter!
Here is how this usually goes.
You picked the Leshavult. You are happy. Then you see a photo of a fourteen-pip giant in a cultist robe and you have a small crisis, because a giant is obviously a Commonwealth model and you have already committed.
Except it is not. Loubard is legal in both.
Thirty-two of Moonstone's 140 characters are legal in more than one faction, which is close to a quarter of the entire game, and working out which ones by flipping through cards is genuinely tedious. So here is the whole list.
The Rule, Briefly
When you build a troupe you pick one faction and may only take characters from it. Some characters, though, belong to two, and the rules are explicit: a cross-faction character can be selected by a troupe that has chosen either of its parent factions.
The crest at the top right of the Character Card is what tells you.
That is the whole rule. What follows is the consequence.
Dominion and Shades: The Ghost Pirates
Nine characters, and it is the most thematically obvious pairing in the game once you see it. Half of them are pirates. Being dead did not stop them.
| Character | Pips | Base | Keywords |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barnakelle | 12 | 40mm | Troll, Spirit, Pirate |
| Viscount de Faulte | 11 | 40mm | Risen, Animal, Noble |
| Chezapeaky | 9 | 40mm | Spirit, Animal, Pirate |
| Viktor Petty, Graverobber | 8 | 30mm | Human, Rogue |
| Commodore Delahaye | 7 | 30mm | Spirit, Pirate |
| Igor, the Servant | 7 | 30mm | Spirit |
| Banshee | 6 | 30mm | Faerie, Spirit |
| Brigid | 6 | 30mm | Faerie, Pirate |
| Jobie | 5 | 30mm | Goblin, Rogue |
Why it matters: if you play Dominion and you want a genuinely large body, Barnakelle at twelve pips on a 40mm base is available to you without ever touching the Shades crest.
Commonwealth and Leshavult: The Biggest Overlap
Ten characters, the largest crossover in the game, and it is mostly fauns and animals.
| Character | Pips | Base | Keywords |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loubard | 14 | 40mm | Giant, Cultist |
| Jackalope | 10 | 40mm | Animal |
| Hoff | 9 | 30mm | Faun, Soldier |
| Boris, The Bunny Summoner | 8 | 30mm | Faun, Wizard |
| Streatham | 8 | 30mm | Human, Cultist, Rogue |
| Brother Daniel | 7 | 30mm | Human, Cultist, Cleric |
| Jayda | 7 | 30mm | Faun, Soldier |
| Mr Toodles | 7 | 30mm | Faun, Cleric |
| Murder Bunny | 4 | 30mm | Animal |
| Pickles | 4 | 30mm | Animal, Rogue |
Loubard is the headline. Fourteen pips is the joint highest in the game, and he is available to two factions. A Giant who is also a Cultist is not a combination you get to make twice.
And note the bottom of that table. Murder Bunny and Pickles at four pips each. Moonstone counts models, not points, so a four-pip animal takes up exactly as much of your six-model troupe as a fourteen-pip giant does. That is a real decision, not a trap.
Dominion and Leshavult: The Nobles and the Priestess
Seven characters, and this one skews toward Nobles and Cultists.
| Character | Pips | Base | Keywords |
|---|---|---|---|
| Knoll | 12 | 40mm | Troll, Wizard |
| The Beast | 9 | 30mm | Human, Noble, Animal |
| Anya Bartol | 7 | 30mm | Human, Noble |
| Nancy Priston | 7 | 30mm | Goblin, Rogue, Cultist |
| Striga Anya | 7 | 30mm | Spirit |
| The Revenant | 7 | 30mm | Human, Noble, Spirit |
| Gwendoline, Leshavult Priestess | 6 | 30mm | Faerie, Cultist |
Knoll is a twelve-pip Troll who is also a Wizard, which is the kind of sentence that makes people take up this game.
Commonwealth and Dominion: Giants for Hire
Only three, but look at what they are.
| Character | Pips | Base | Keywords |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dim & Dimmer | 14 | 40mm | Giant, Mercenary |
| Gotchgut | 14 | 40mm | Giant, Mercenary |
| Muridae | 8 | 30mm | Gnome, Rogue |
Two of the three joint-largest characters in the entire game are Mercenary Giants available to two factions. If you have ever wondered why you see so much of Gotchgut across a table, that is why.
Leshavult and Shades, and One Lonely Pair
Two here, and one in a category of its own.
| Character | Pips | Base | Factions | Keywords |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snag | 11 | 40mm | Leshavult + Shades | Treefolk, Spirit |
| Morag | 7 | 30mm | Leshavult + Shades | Faun, Spirit |
| Angerboda | 12 | 40mm | Commonwealth + Shades | Risen, Soldier, Giant, Norse |
Angerboda is the only Commonwealth and Shades character in the game. A twelve-pip Risen Norse Giant, and the sole bridge between those two crests.
What This Actually Changes About Buying
Three practical things, and this is the part worth taking away.
A box you buy is rarely wasted. If you drift from Dominion to Leshavult in six months, everything on the Dominion and Leshavult list above comes with you. That is seven characters that never became shelf ornaments.
Some boxes are unusually efficient. The Cursed at $50 is four models where every single one is legal in two factions. Rogues Gallery at $50 contains Nancy Priston, Streatham and Pickles, three of the thirty-two, alongside Skuggi.
And the big ones cluster here. Look back at the pip columns. Loubard 14, Dim & Dimmer 14, Gotchgut 14, Angerboda 12, Barnakelle 12, Knoll 12, Snag 11, Viscount de Faulte 11. The heaviest models in Moonstone are disproportionately cross-faction, which means the expensive, characterful centrepiece you buy has a much better chance of surviving a change of heart than the rank and file does.
The Caveat, Because There Always Is One
Not every character on this list is sold as a standalone box. Some arrive inside troupe boxes, some are out of production, and a few are not currently in our catalogue at all. We have linked the ones you can buy from us today and left the rest unlinked rather than sending you to a dead page.
If a character above is not linked and you want it, ask. We would rather tell you honestly where it is than have you find out at checkout.
So. Now that you know your faction is a quarter bigger than you thought: who are you adding?
May your bluffs hold and your Moonstones stay stolen.
