A Newbie’s Guide to Star Wars Legion

A Newbie’s Guide to Star Wars Legion

Hello, young Padawan! So, you’ve just gotten your hands on a shiny new Star Wars Legion starter set, and you’re probably thinking, “What on Tatooine do I do now?” Well, fear not, young Padawan, because we’re about to embark on an epic journey together. Buckle up, and may the Force be with you!

Step 1: Pick Your Starter Set

Legion no longer ships one universal core box. These days you start with the faction starter you actually want to play, and each one is a self-contained on-ramp: Rebel Alliance, Galactic Empire, Galactic Republic, or Separatist Alliance. Grab the one whose trailer plays in your head, then add the Essentials Pack for the tokens, templates and dice you will need at the table.

Step 2: Assemble Your Troops

First things first, you’re going to need a squad. Whether you’re commanding B2 Super Battle Droids or Clone Troopers Infantry, you’ll need to assemble and paint your miniatures. Remember, these miniatures are supplied unassembled and unpainted, so you’ll get to add your personal touch to each one.

Step 3: Choose Your Faction

Are you more of a Rebel Alliance or a Galactic Empire kind of player? Maybe the clone-era Galactic Republic or the droid tide of the Separatist Alliance is calling. Or perhaps the Shadow Collective and the rest of the galaxy’s Mercenaries are more your style. Whichever faction you choose, make sure to build a roster of your favorite Star Wars characters to create your very own dream team.

Step 4: Learn the Rules

Once you’ve chosen your faction and assembled your troops, it’s time to learn the rules. Whether you’re piloting a T-47 Airspeeder or commanding a squad of Republic Clone Commandos, you’ll need to understand how each unit operates on the battlefield. Play the game at least four or five times before you judge it. Legion’s command-card and order-token system does not really click until you have been burned by it once or twice, and that is the moment it gets good.

Step 5: Before You Buy More Models....

Before you go all in and start buying every expansion pack in sight, make sure you actually enjoy the game. I know, I know, it’s Star Wars, what’s not to love, right? But trust me, get those first few games in before you decide to expand your galaxy. When you are ready, the cheapest mistake you can avoid is buying a hero before you own enough corps troopers to hold the board for them.

Step 6: Join the Community

There’s a whole community of Star Wars Legion players out there, just waiting to welcome you with open arms. Joining the community is a great way to learn more about the game, ask questions, and meet like-minded people. It’s like having your very own Rebel Alliance (or Galactic Empire, if that’s more your style).

Community Resources:

  1. Facebook: Star Wars: Legion group
  2. Your Friendly Local Game Store. If that is us, come say hello, and if it isn’t, go find yours anyway. A regular opponent beats any amount of theorycrafting.

Keep practicing, keep playing, and May the Force be with you!
